Does anyone know how the automatic transmission on the 996 911 is? !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Manual is my first choice, but if the automatic isn't terrible, I could live with it.

Do you have experience with modern dual clutch or very good single clutch transmissions?

No. I've driven some ok automatics and a lot of terrible ones. I'm just wondering if it is programmed for spirited driving, or if I should only consider manual 911s.

The answer to both of those thoughts is, "Yes".

If it is anything like the auto in Boxsters of the same vintage, I would say avoid. PDK is great, but the tiptronic slushbox kinda sucks.

As a side not, the car you are looking at seems kinda CP.

Technically yes but not really. If I remember correctly, the early 996s had Tiptronic (not Tiptronic S), which if you're not accustomed to the lasted greatest transmissions might be alright.

That being said, I think you would be much more pleased with a manual, not just because everyone says manuals are better but because you'll probably be able to shift just as quickly as the automatic.

Thanks for your input. I'll try to avoid the Tiptronics.

You're welcome. I think the biggest thing is just find a good car and try it out. Also, especially with higher end cars like this, always try to buy the latest year model of the generation, as they are usually the most reliable.

My dad had an early Cayenne S with Tiptronic. He HATED that transmission. Different car, I know. But the only first hand experience I have with it.

My personal opinion is that the only 996s you'd want to buy today are:

Turbo 6MT

The unicorn - unmolested and untracked GT3 (you're probably more likely to find an actual unicorn)

Yeah. I always avoided the early semi automatic transmissions so I don't have experience with it either. I'm going off of my experience riding in a Carrera from the period.

Porsche sure has improved its transmissions since then.

It's funny how Porsche lasted as long as they did with Tiptronic. It was semi automatic but used the traditional torque converter design.

Ferrari and BMW had true sequential manual boxes in the late 90s. Porsche didn't have a flappy paddle manual box until PDK launched in 2009.

But to Porsche's credit they totally nailed PDK.

Indeed. I guess they were probably developing PDK but it took them a bit longer to perfect then they expected.

Yup and they both have some of the best transmission available still to this day. What bugs me is that Mercedes still can't seem to make a good dual clutch except for the SLS Black's unit.

I agree. It's fabulous. I wonder if the new PDK S transmission in the 991 GT3 really is as big of an improvement as some of the magazines say it is.

I read that they wanted to launch PDK in the 911 Turbo back in the 90s! But the technology was too expensive and not reliable enough.

I don't know how much better the GT3's PDK can be since the PDK in the base model 991 cars is already so good.

What's really impressive about PDK isn't even the speed of the shifts but how bulletproof it is. Apparently you can use launch control in the new cars as much as you want and it won't grenade the transmission.

Huh. I've never heard that story.

Yeah I know.

Yeah. Did you see that Road and Track where they launched a Turbo S something like 50 times back-to-back?
